For the first time in several election cycles, California voters will be able to vote for a Republican for Governor, assuming Steve Hilton maintains his current top two standing. While party registration is heavily Democrat and likely to favor Becerra in the November General Election, having a Republican on the ballot has become a rarity.

While a plurality of American voters identify as Independents, organized political parties are being dominated by more extreme views. Younger voters in particular are less likely to join existing parties. But does the electoral system disfavor Independent voters ?
