The Crimean Tatars have inhabited the Crimean Peninsula for almost 1000 years. However, successive annexation and colonization of Crimea by Russia, saw the Tatar population decimated by famine and deportation to Uzbekistan. But Ukraine has breathed new life into Tatar autonomy.
